It has recently been reported that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer told a developer conference in Tokyo that Windows 8 would be released in 2012 stating that there would be versions for tablet devices and PCs in a variety of form factors.
Ballmer said: "We're obviously hard at work on the next version of Windows. Windows 7 PCs will sell over 350 million units this year, we've done a lot in Windows 7 to improve customer satisfaction and we have a brand new user interface. We've added touch, and ink and speech and yet, as we look forward to the next generation of Windows systems, which will come out next year, there's a whole lot more coming.
As we progress through the year, you ought to expect to hear a lot about Windows 8. The browser is an area where we've been very active. Internet Explorer 9 is the fastest browser around because of the way that we've married it to Windows systems and allow essentially full exploitation of the hardware to have the fastest and most beautiful web on the planet run on Windows systems."
However the news on Windows 8 was swiftly denied by a Microsoft spokesperson, who claimed that Ballmer made an error and called the announcement a 'misstatement'. However based on past form the notoriously tight-lipped Microsoft may be trying to throw rivals off the scent by keeping its cards close to its chest for as long as possible.
Last week Intel software chief Renee James got into hot water over comments made about the next version of Windows, indicating that Intel may already have its hands on an early build of Microsoft's next OS.
Operations Director Ian Chilvers said, "2012 looks like it could be a year of surprises and future tech. We'll just have to watch this space"
