What is FakeMX?

FakeMX is :

  • an additional tool in the fight against spam
  • an SMTP Server that sits at the end of your list of mail servers
  • easy to setup with a simple DNS change

FakeMX is an SMTP server that sits at the end of your list of mail servers.  As in the lowest priority of mail server but the highest DNS MX number.  FakeMX then combats against the spammers who try to target the least important mail server.  Any real emails will get an SMTP 451 error and told to try again.  When they try again the sending mail server will try a different server and not the last on the list.

By adding the FakeMX server to my domain I got rid of 80% spam that was hitting my primary mail server.  That server is running spam filtering as well, so by adding FakeMX I've taken a load of the main server.
