Have you been wondering on the growth of the Internet over 2010? Well wonder no more. Using information from sources such as Google, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Pew Research, Internet World Stats we can reveal a fascinating picture of the Internet growth and usage in 2010.
In 2010 there were 107 trillion emails sent globally; giving a daily average of 294 billion emails sent. The chart below shows the breakdown by region of the 1.88 billion email users worldwide. This figure is up by 480 million new email users since the year before (2009).

The annual average of spam was 89.1% and that was even with a noticeable decline in spam towards the end of the year with several botnets becoming dormant. Based on this figure, that equates to 262 billion spam emails per day.
There were an additional 21.4 million websites added to the Internet and indexed for search, bringing the total to 255 million website on the Internet by the end of 2010.
Twitter also saw a huge increase in subscribers going from 75 million users in 2009 to an incredible 175 million users by Q4 of 2010. 25 billion tweets were sent in 2010; giving a daily average of 68 million tweets per day. Likewise Facebook saw good growth with a user base of 600 million and climbing.
YouTube stats show an impressive 35 hours of video is being uploaded every minute of the day with 2 billion videos being watched daily.
So what's in store for 2011?
Spam and Malware will increase, and in fact the first few weeks of 2011 has seen several botnets wake up already. The gap between social networking sites and search will decrease, bringing information to the user so much more faster and in the unique context in which they require it.
2011 will see companies take advantage of online-advertising and email marketing campaigns compared to the more costly forms of advertising and marketing.
Devices will get smaller, faster and higher in spec. 2011 will see the launch of the next generation iPad and more Android style tablets.
It also goes without saying that if Julian Assange (Founder of WikiLeaks) is prosecuted for his role in disseminating classified documents that someone else will take his place and information will increasingly come under the public eye.
