What is spam?

Spam is the term used for electronic messaging of emails or bulk emails to unsolicited recipients. Whilst spam is most widely recognised in the form of junk/unwanted emails, the term spam also applies to similar abuses in other medias such as Instant Messaging Spam, Usenet Spam, SMS Spam, Social Networking Spam, Fax Spam and many many more..

When did spam start?

The earliest documented spam message was a message advertising the availability of a new model of computer from DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation) using ARPANET in 1978 to a grand sum of 393 recipients.

The first major commercial spam incident being recorded on 5th March 1994 when a team of lawyers from 'Laurence Canter and Martha Siegel' started posting messages advertising their immigration law services. This first commercial use of spamming was commonly termed the "green card" spam.

Is spam just for advertising?
